Three killed in violent protests in Venezuela
Demonstrators help a journalist whose leg was injured while covering clashes between protesters and the Bolivarian National Guard during a protest in Caracas on Monday. Protests flared throughout the week, including in slums that have long been bulwarks of support for Venezuela’s socialist leaders hours after a pro-government rally evolved into a violent demonstration against President Nicolas Maduro. In the western Lara state, two people, aged 14 and 36, were killed during a chaotic protest on Tuesday, and another one was killed in the Bolivar state. Venezuela is undergoing its first consistent wave of anti-government demonstrations in three years, after a Supreme Court decision in late March to assume the functions of the opposition-led Congress sparked outcry among a population. The court quickly overturned the most controversial part of its decision but the move triggered condemnation at home and abroad.
