MUSIC:  3rd Classical Music Festival at Centro Cultural Konex
Ludwig van Beethoven might have passed away 190 years ago but his music is, without a doubt, still alive. So much so that the Centro Cultural Konex thought it fit to host a festival and thus pay homage to one of the most iconic musicians of all time. Centred around his classical music pieces, the festival will not only feature orchestras and quartets in charge of playing his best-known symphonies, but will also include a concert in the dark with an enveloping sound system to appreciate his music uniquely. Furthermore, there will even be a show for children, as well as movie screenings of the biopic on Beethoven’s life “Immortal Beloved” and the opera “Fidelio.”
From Wednesday 19 th to Sunday 23rd at Centro Cultural Konex (Sarmiento 3131). Tickets at $220 through Ticketek or at the venue. Some activities are free and open to the public.

Theatre: El amor es un bien by Francisco Lumerman
Sonia lives in a small town south of Buenos Aires with her uncle, Iván. Both of them run a hostel where they work and live alongside Iván’s wife. There is a single guest at the lodge, whose departure date is yet to be determined. As Sonia’s father comes into the picture, living as a group and getting along becomes a challenge. This might sound like a story thought of to portray a dysfunctional Argentinean family living deep into Buenos Aires province, but it was actually inspired by none other than Anton Chekhov and his “Uncle Vania.” It is precisely Lumerman’s ability to place Chekhov’s work in our modern times that has made this the critically acclaimed and award-winning play it is.

Saturdays at 10pm and Sundays at 6pm at Moscú Theater (Camargo 506).
Tickets at $200 at the venue. Discounts available.

Film: Last showing of Cuatreros by Albertina Carri
In this, Albertina Carri’s fifth feature film, she chooses to tell the story of Isidro Velázquez, the last gaucho outlaw in Argentina. It is a story that goes over the very resources that enable it, with the research and the quest for archive materials and long-lost films being done as the tale of Velázquez is told. In looking for the consequences of what happened to him at the hands of a bourgeois justice, as Carri calls it, she unravels bigger things about our culture and politics. Carri’s work, which has always been hard to place under any particular genre or label, is frequently met with critical acclaim. “Cuatreros” has not only been screened at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, but was also part of the 67 th edition of Berlinale last February.

Sunday 16th at 8pm at MALBA (Av. Figueroa Alcorta 3415).
Tickets at $60. Discounts available for students and senior citizens.

Music:  Carlos “Negro” Aguirre at Café Vinilo
Anyone who listens to el Negro Aguirre’s music probably couldn’t guess what his musical training was like. Although his work is defined by a very Argentine identity, with Latin American folk serving as his main focus, the deep understanding of music he shows in his more complex instrumental pieces are true testament to his more classic formation, with his masterful use of the piano and his freedom when improvising scream of jazz.
Aguirre is, therefore, a complete musician to say the least, and he is putting all of his range on stage at a music cycle this weekend, where every show will be different from the next. Friday will be marked by his own compositions; Saturday will be the turn of popular folk songs, and Sunday will be all about musicians from his native province of Entre Ríos and the littoral area.

Friday 14th , Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th at 9pm at Café Vinilo (Gorriti 3780).
Tickets at $250 through www.cafevinilo.com.ar or at the venue.
