Seven days

By Michael Soltys / Senior Editor

FRIDAY. President Mauricio Macri and Buenos Aires Governor María Eugenia Vidal inaugurate Metrobus in the Peronist stronghold of La Matanza in a politically charged ceremony.

LAST WEEKEND. Emmanuel Macron wins the French presidential runoff with almost two-thirds of the vote. Former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner departs for a week in Europe, starting at a Greek refugee centre.

MONDAY. Italian President Sergio Mattarella commences a four-day visit. Former vice-president Amado Boudou begins what will presumably be a long sequence of trials.

TUESDAY. Late in the day, the Lower House votes 211-1 to approve an express bill effectively rendering toothless last week’s “2x1” Supreme Court potentially reducing prison sentences for crimes against humanity without actually overruling the tribunal. Vidal finally accepts the exit of Buenos Aires provincial police chief Pablo Bressi (the target of accusations by maverick deputy Elisa Carrió).

WEDNESDAY. After the Senate has already approved the bill against the controversial Supreme Court ruling by a 56-0 vote in the morning, hundreds of thousands pour into the streets to make their own protest (popular Brazilian ex-president Lula can only draw a fraction of that crowd for his Curitiba court appearance the same day). Macri finally breaks his silence on the issue. INDEC statistics bureau announces an unexpectedly high inflation figure of 2.6 percent for April.

THURSDAY. CFK winds up her trans-Atlantic jaunt in Brussels with a two-hour harangue to the leftist caucus of the European Parliament.
