FpV and FR ahead in midterm polling for BA province

Polling by Management & Fit suggests that candidates aligned with the Victory Front (FpV) and the Renewal Front (FR) are in pole position in the province of Buenos Aires ahead of the October midterms. In third place is the ruling Let’s Change (Cambiemos) coalition.

The province of Buenos Aires is the single-largest electoral district, making it decisive for any presidential aspirations, representation in the Lower House and the testing of relative power within factions. The rival parties and coalitions have yet to define their tickets for the province, which will elect 35 lawmakers to the Lower House as well as three senators.

According to pollster Management & Fit, former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner currently has the highest level of voter intention in the province of Buenos Aires with 35.3 percent compared to Sergio Massa on 34.6 percent. Neither has formally confirmed if they will run though the former head of state seemed to rule out a run last week. Since then she has softened that position. Esteban Bullrich, Education minister for President Mauricio Macri, is in third place with 19.5 percent of the vote.

When the figures are disaggregated into the far more population-dense Greater Buenos Aires, the former president’s numbers inch up to 36.2 percent, Massa improves to 35.6 percent and Bullrich declines to 16.9 percent. Daniel Scioli has similar levels of approval to those of Fernández de Kirchner if she were to decide not to run.

In a head-to-head match-up of Massa with Margarita Stolbizer (Progressives) against Scioli and Fernández de Kirchner against Bullrich and Gladys González (currently running the ACUMAR authority in charge of cleaning up the Riachuelo), the Massa-Stolbizer ticket comes out on top with 35.2 percent of voter intention, to 34.8 percent for the FpV and 14.7 for the PRO candidates.

Florencio Randazzo, former Interior minister during the Kirchner years, has yet to formally throw his hat into the ring and it remains to be seen in what form but the polling company also said that more than 30 percent of voters would vote for him when facing off against Stolbizer.
