Seven days

By Michael Soltys / Senior Editor
FRIDAY. The Supreme Court announces a rewind of its stillborn “2x1” ruling to reduce prison sentences for crimes against humanity. Worldwide cyber attacks draw more attention also here than most local news.

LAST WEEKEND. President Mauricio Macri arrives in China where he is to spend the whole week while France’s Emmanuel Macron wastes no time in being inaugurated president just one weekend after his run-off victory but most interest here falls on River Plate’s 3-1 Superclásico away win over Boca Juniors.

MONDAY. Mothers of Plaza de Mayo leader Hebe de Bonafini and the Schoklender brothers are sent to trial for the embezzlement of public funds from the Shared Dreams low-income housing scheme of which the latter were trustees.

TUESDAY. Macri concludes his participation in the “One Belt, One Road” summit and starts his own official state visit to China. Back home an appeals court exempts all pensions from taxation.

WEDNESDAY. Macri signs agreements to the tune of over US$15 billion in Beijing. Buenos Aires province teachers union leader Roberto Baradel is re-elected with almost three-quarters of the vote. Brazilian President Michel Temer sinks into even deeper trouble after being incriminated by a graft tape.

THURSDAY. All eyes abroad — Macri moves onto Japan but Brazil’s deepening crisis is a much bigger concern.
