Baradel retains hold on SUTEBA teachers’ union

Roberto Baradel, one of the most visible figues in the pay dispute between teachers and the province of Buenos Aires, has won re-election to lead the SUTEBA teachers’ union and a mandate for what he says is a continued campaign for wage negotiations at a national level.

Voting this week within the largest union in the province of Buenos Aires resulted in Baradel being re-elected as secretary-general by a landslide, taking 73 percent of the votes. Romina Del Plá, who is currently head of the SUTEBA branch in the important Buenos Aires district of La Matanza polled at 25 percent and two percent of the votes were blank or invalid.

“We are going to continue the struggle to ensure that teachers get a national living-wage negotiation, a law to fund education and the increase in the budget for public schools. We will continue to defend the salaries of educational workers” said Baradel in a victory speech after the election results were announced.

“Our union’s primary concern is to resolve the conflict in the province. This election, in addition to being settled at the ballot-box was discussed in school, where every day there’s a struggle for public education. We will continue this fight with the conviction that we are going to triumph.”

SUTEBA and various other unions have rejected a series of pay offers made by the government of Governor María Eugenia Vidal which have been in the range of about 20 percent and educational professionals staged a walkout in the province for much of March.

Unions are seeking a much higher increase and have also insisted on the need for a national negotiation to set a benchmark in the salary negotiations. National Education Minister Esteban Bullrich has categorically ruled out such a negotiation.
